Finecut blesses The Profane

Sales News

South Korean sales company Finecut Co Ltd ȭ has picked up worldwide rights outside India to Sidharth SRINIVASAN's upcoming horror The Profane त्रास.
Previously called The Penance (Samaadhi), Srinivasan's film was presented at the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) and Locarno Film Festival's Open Doors project markets last year. He describes his film as a "truly Indian horror film" that fulfils his desire to "explore the dynamics of a family in crisis through a minimalist chamber drama."
The story is set by the Ganges River in Varanasi where a son and daughter bring their mother to die. They check in at a dilapidated motel where she has a stroke and falls into a coma. A game of cat and mouse ensues with the daughter happy to help nudge her mother to "the other side" while the son, who has singlehandedly cared for her, will do anything to revive her.
The film will be produced by Srinivasan, through his Reel Illusion Films, and by Peter TOMBS and Andy Starke of the UK's Rook Films. Finecut's SUH Young-joo co-produces. Rook Films' most recent production, Sightseers, has its world premiere in this year's Directors' Fortnight Quinzaine des réalisateurs. Sightseers' director, Ben Wheatley (Kill List), will executive produce The Profane.
Andy Starke says, "We're hoping for a film that will be as much of a stab in the heart for the genre movie as The Ring (1998) and Audition ーǫ (1999) were in the late 90's and Old Boy õ庸 (2003) and I Saw the Devil Ǹ Ҵ (2010) have become. Finecut is the perfect partner for Sidharth's incredible movie"
Production is expected to start in early 2013.
